In my opinion, if he WANTS to pay through the courts, he definitely should. Child support is for the security of not only the mother of the child, but the father as well(so that it is documented that he is paying what he should be each month). A guy friend of mine took his BM to court to be placed on a court appointed child support order just to minimize any future drama that may have come his way. He says that is the best thing he could have done. Child support is not a punishment, it is a right of the child that both the child's parent financially and emotionally support the child. The financial support can be ordered by the non custodial parent, but unfortunately the emotial support cannot. However, he can also make sure with the support order that he gets visitation, etc. We all here know how it is to have a BM be so selfish as to prohibit the father of their child from being in the child's life, so we know how you feel

Depending on where you live, CS usually has to be filed by the mother. DH wanted to file for CS when BM was wanting to bleed him dry. The courts told him that he couldn't do it, that's the responsibility of the mother.
Go for visitation, ASAP. They will probably set up a CS hearing based on that. Be specific about your conditions. Figure out what you want, if you want the kids there every week, or every other week, or where and when you get the kid. It will usually be granted in a lot of cases.
